BLOOD RELATIONS
Formulas:
There is a standard set of symbols which help one decode family
relationship, Below is list of such symbols. Family Tree Notations:

Conditions:
•
Don’t judge the genders on the name basis.
•
Using the hints like “he”, ”she”, the gender must be considered.
•
Be aware of the word “Only”.

Type 1- Describing from the jumbled-up
description
1) A has three children. B is the brother of C, and C is the sister of D; E, who
is the wife of A, is the mother of D. There is only one daughter of the
husband of E. What is the relation between D and B?
Answer:
Therefore, D is a boy because there is only one daughter of E (or husband of
E as given in the question statement).
Here, + and - has been used for male and female, respectively. = sign has
been used to show husband-wife relationship and for ↔ sibling relationship.
Hence, B is the brother of D.
2) Dinesh said to Naveen, ‘The person playing this game is the youngest of
the two brothers of the daughter of my father’s wife.’ How is the person
playing the game related to Dinesh?
Answer:

As per the question, the person playing game is different from Dinesh. The
person playing the game is the brother of Dinesh.
Type 2- Blood relations based on puzzles
3) If Aman is Priya’s brother; Priya is Chirag’s sister; and Chirag is Dhruv’s
father. How is Dhruv related to Aman?
Answer:
As Aman, Priya and Chirag are brothers and sister and Dhruv is Chirag’s son.
So, Dhruv is Aman’s nephew.
4) P's son Q is married with R whose sister S is married to T the brother of Q.
How S is related to P?
Answer:
Since T is the brother of Q, therefore, P is the father of T
S is the wife of T, so S is the daughter-in-law of P.
Type 3- Coded relations
5) If X + Y means X is the mother of Y; X - Y means X is the brother Y; X % Y
means X is the father of Y and X x Y means X is the sister of Y, which of the
following shows that P is the maternal uncle of Q?

Answer:
P - M means P is the brother of M
M + N means M is the mother of N
N x Q means N is the sister of Q
Therefore, P is the maternal uncle of Q.
6) If X + Y means X is the brother of Y; X - Y means X is the sister of Y and X
x Y means X is the father of Y. Which of the following means that C is the
son of M?
Answer:
M x N means M is the father of N
N - C means N is the sister of C
and C + F means C is the brother of F.
Hence, M is the father of C or C is the son of M.
